Bhí na scoláirí ildánacha ó Choláiste Lú ar an stáitse arís le déanaí ar an 22 Márta ag cur a n-Oíche Cheoil ar siúl. Smaoinigh an Chomhairle na dTuistí ar an ócáid ar dtús mar ócáid tiomsaithe airgid agus an chéad shárthaispeántas cheoil taobh amuigh den scoil. Chaith scoláirí ón gcéad go dtí an cúigiú bliain cúpla seachtain ag cleachtadh don ócáid ag ullmhú gach rud ó cheol traidisiúnta go dtí the Cranberries. Bhí an Oíche Cheoil ar siúl sa suíomh draíochtach an Oriel Centre/Sean-Ghaol le hIníon Nic Eochaidh ag feidhmniú mar MC don oíche.

Chuir an rang ceol ón gcúigiú bliain (nó mar is fearr aithne mar Seachtrán) tús leis an oíche lena gclúdach de Zombie in ómós do Dolores Ó Ríordán, i ndiaidh sin bhí an t-amhrán Runaway ó bhanna áitiúil the Corrs againn chomh maith lena n-amhrán féin-chumtha teacht in aois Cois Trá.  Ansin chuir Clár Nic Colla agus Fírinne Nic an tSaoir an lucht féachana faoi gheasa lena leaganacha aonréadacha de Summertime Sadness le Lana Del Ray agus Put Your Head on My Shoudler le Paul Anka. Tháinig Fírinne díreach ar ais chuig an stáitse le Lauryn Ní Riain an uair seo agus chas siad an t-amhrán Falling Slowly a bhuaigh gradam Oscar do Ghlen Hansard agus Markéta Irglová. Agus díreach roimh dheireadh an chéad leath, thóg muid sos ón gceol beo le féachaint ar píosa damhsa Gaelach chuig The Storyteller ó Chlár Nic an Bhaird.

Thosaigh Rang na hIdirbhliana an dara leath ag léiriú a scileanna nua ar an ucáiléile ag seinm le haonréadaithe Aderonke Saliu agus Jaymee De Siúin lena gclúdach de I’m Yours le Jason Mraz. Ansin d’athraigh an t-atmaisféar go hiomlán le sain-cheacht ar an bpianó le gach rud ó Bach go Les Miserables ó scoláire idirbhliana Justin Ó hÁgáin atá ag caitheamh na bliana ag staidéar i gCeol-Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann. Sheinn Justin cúpla píosa a chur sé i láthair ag an bhFeis Ceoil i mBaile Átha Cliath an lá céanna inár tháinig sé sa dara háit ina chatagóir. Ba iad dara grúpa deireanach den oíche ná grúpa traidisiúnta na scoile a bhfuair gach duine sa halla ag bualadh a gcosa ón úrlár leis an leagan traidisiúnta de Hey Jude ó na Beatles agus seit de poirt luascadh le Rocky Road to Dublin san áireamh. Agus chun deireadh spleodrach a chur le hoíche den chéad scoth, chas cór na scoile le tionlacan ó Liz Mc Connon ar an pianó. Chas siad a n-aistriúchán nua de Teenage Dirtbag ó Wheatus, a leagan de Titanium le David Guetta agus Sia a bhuaigh Scléip cúpla bliain ó shin agus fuair siad an lucht féachana go léir ag canadh lena n-encore de Stand By Me le Ben E King.

D’oibrigh tuismitheoirí, múinteoirí agus scoláirí go léir an-chrua chun an oíche seo a chur ar siúl agus bhain gach uile duine an-sult as an oíche seo a bhí cláraithe mar imeacht oifigiúil de Bhliain na Gaeilge 2018. Ba mhaith leis an scoil a buíochas a ghabháil le Helena Mullion/Helena Ní Mhaoláin agus an Mid-Morning Show ar LMFM a thug cuireadh do roinnt scoláirí le teacht chuig an stuideó ar an lá chun labhairt faoin imeacht agus seinm go beo sa stuideó.

The talented students of Coláiste Lú took to the stage once again on the 22nd March presenting their Oíche Cheoil. The brain child of the Comhairle na dTuistí (Parent’s Council) this event was both a school fundraiser and the school’s very first after-hours musical showcase. Students from first to fifth year spent many weeks rehearsing for the event with Iníon Ní Channan which featured everything from trad to the Cranberries. The Oíche Cheoil took place in the magically intimate setting of the Oriel Centre (Sean-Ghaol) with Iníon Nic Eochaidh expertly acting as MC for the night.

The mutli-talented  5thyear music class (also known as Seachtrán) kicked off the night with their cover of Zombie in honour of the late Dolores O Ríordán, this was followed by a local favourite Runaway by the Corrs and finally their self-composed coming of age tale Cois Trá. Next the crowd were treated to some beautiful solo and duet performances. Clár Nic Colla’s spellbinding version of Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Ray and Fírinne Nic an tSaoir’s quirky take on Paul Anka’s Put Your Head on My Shoulder commanded the attention of the room. Another quick swap of instruments and Fírinne this time accompanied by Lauryn Ní Riain performed the Oscar winning song Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. And just before the interval we took a break from live music and looked on as Clár Nic an Bhaird demonstrated her fantastic Irish dancing skills to the Set Dance The Storyteller.

The second half began with the Transition Year class demonstrating their newly developed ukulele skills accompanying soloists Aderonke Saliu and Jaymee De Siúin with their cover of I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. This was followed by a piano masterclass with everything from Bach to Les Miserables from Justin Ó hÁgáin who is currently spending TY studying in the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Justin’s repertoire included pieces he had performed that very day at the annual Feis Ceoil in Dublin where he was runner up in his category. The penultimate act of the night was the fabulous school trad group who had everyone’s toes tapping to a traditional cover of Hey Jude by the Beatles and a set of slip jigs including the Rocky Road to Dublin. And last but not least the award winning school choir accompanied by Liz Mc Connon on piano closed the night with their newly translated version of Wheatus’s Teenage Dirtbag, a throwback to their Scléip winning arrangement of Titanium by David Guetta and Sia and finally got the whole crowd involved in an encore of Stand By Me by Ben E King.

Parents, teachers and students alike worked incredibly hard to make this night a reality and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening which was registered as an official Bliain na Gaeilge 2018 event. A special word of thanks must go to Helena Mullins/Helena Ní Mhaoláin and the Mid-Morning Show at LMFM who kindly invited some of our students into studio on the afternoon of the Oíche Cheoil to speak about the event and perform live in studio.
