Padded paws are lying like stones,
one and two and three and four,
resting atop the pine-needle bed.
A lazy rhythm of weighted snores
escapes the overlap of a wet, leathery
mouth. Rising and falling, like a broken
elevator in this silent uncivilised wilderness –
the heavy chest of the woods’ keeper
is a sore sight for trespassers. Matted
and dull are the bristles of blanketed fur
embracing the dozing creature, as natural
a part of him as heart-hammering caution
is natural to all that approach.
Don’t poke the sleeping bear.
